to begin with the plane boeing says will define the future of the air travel. but for the last month or so, if you've been following this with us, the 787 dreamliner has made most of its headlines really for all these mechanical problems. here is just the latest, just a couple of hours ago, this japan airline, 787, was preparing to leaf above then when it started leaking fuel. so guess what happened? flight had to be canceled. and just yesterday morning, same airport, boston's logan airport, small fire broke out on yet another japan airline 787, just about 30 minutes after its arrival from tokyo. all the passengers and crew, they had already left the plane, but there is still a lot to talk about when we talk about what is supposed to be the revolutionary jet. let me begin with sandra endo, watching today's issue for us from washington. sandra, what happened now? >> yeah, brooke. a new day, a new problem for boeing's marquis airplane, the dreamliner, just before noon us is, the pilots of jal flight 007 scheduled nonstop from boston logan airport to tokyo, reported a fuel leak on the runway.

a rough week for boeing's newest jet. today a 787 dreamliner flight is canceled for an error message about the plane's brakes. on monday, a japanese airline, a 787, caught fire at boston's logan airport. the fire started in the battery compartment. no one was on board. and then on tuesday, another japanese airliner 787 was canceled, this time because of a fuel leak. >> hey, that japan air may know it, but they've got fuel or something spilling out the outboard left wing there quite a bit. >> sandra endo joins us now from washington. tell us more about these incidents. they're now under investigation, right? >> well, carol, the string of irregularities for boeing's marquee plane, the 787 dreamliner, is certainly a concern for the manufacturer. the plane is the first commercial airliner to be made mostly of carbon composites, or plastic, which means it's a lighter plane that boeing says uses less fuel than conventional airliners. well, boeing says it is working with ntsb investigators, looking into monday's fire on a japan airlines 787 at boston's logan airport. the fire involved the batteri
of a massive plane at logan international airport. turns out to be a boeing dreamliner. well the national transportation safety board is now launching a full investigation. this could be just one of several problems with the dreamliner, which was launched with so much fan nare. dan springer has details for us from seattle. >> reporter: yeah, jon the national transportation safety board has a team in boston right now investigating what they are calling a 787 boeing smoke event. it happened shortly after all the passengers and crew had got even off the plane at logan airport. they had just taken a 12-hour japan airlines flight from tokyo. a maintenance worker smelled smoke and traced it to a compartment near the back of the dreamliner which holds the lithium battery that powers the plane when it's not flying. a battery eventually exploded, the cabin filled up with smoke but nobody was hurt. had this happened during a flight it could have been catastrophic. it adds to the list of electrical problems the 787 has experienced since there was a major fire during a test flight in 2010. in decembe

lebeau's got breaking news ton the 787 boeing dream liner. phil, if you're out there, tell me what you've got, my friend. >> larry, we have learned that the faa is going to be conducting a special review of the power system in the 787 dream liner. essentially this is the faa saying let's take a pause here and take a look at the design, the manufacturing, how the power system works on the dream liner. let me be clear here, this is a special review. this is not an airworthiness directive. it would be a much more serious matter. and it might involve airlines being told stand down, don't fly this plane. that is not what is happening. airlines that have the dream liner will continue to flow it. but the faa is saying this is not simply looking into what happened on monday in boston, we want to do a special review of the power system remember, at the heart of this is the issue of the way the dream liner derives so much of the onboard electricity. this uses much more electricity than any other plane. as a result, it's much more complex than your typical airplane. again, the faa is going to be

. >>> the mechanical problems keep rolling in for boeing's 787 dream liner. the latest happened in japan today. an all nippon airways flight was cancelled after an error message. on monday a fire broke out and yesterday a fuel leak cancelled another dream liner flight. not a good start for this very complex dreamliner aircraft. what is the company doing to rectify these problems? >> reporter: not a good start. the company held a conference call today to discuss the issues. they say the performance has been similar to the performance of the 777 when it first went into service and went on to say like any brand new plane there are issues. we have to work through them and move on. this is a big deal for boeing which has over 800 orders outstanding for the dreamliner and endured years and delays and problems getting the new plane off the ground in the first place. the bargain hunters are out. we are talking about a company that made $3.5 billion in profit in 2011, on track to top 4 billion for 2012. just to put this in perspective it only accounts for about 7% of total orders outstanding. >> it is meant to

. >> all right, brian, thanks very much. interesting and important stuff. >>> the boeing dream liner hasn't been in the air very long. in fact, the first delivery of one was fewer than 16 months ago. that's why a fire in a battery compartment of one plane is now so troubling. cnn's renee marsh is here working this story. what happened? >> this plane had just landed in boston from tokyo around 10:00 this morning. passengers deplaned. and the next set of passengers were ready to board when a mechanic inspecting the aircraft smelled smoke and called firefighters. they found heavy smoke in the cabin. and a fire in the underbelly of the aircraft. the flames were in a small electronics bay where batteries for an auxiliary power unit are kept. one of the batteries exploded. firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with a special flame retardant. firefighter suffered skin irritation. no passengers were hurt. the return flight to tokyo was canceled. we should also tell you the ntsb, the faa, as well as boeing and the airlines, they are all investigating the cause. >> i take it here too, this
